"Meantime I have to go chop things up to feed the ravening masses."

sounds like part of the screenplay for "Cannibal Holocaust"

You may not be so wide of the mark, old buddy. One day, you too will wake up to find yourself the father of teenagers ...

rob -

Just wait until you send those teenagers off to college.

Then they graduate and come home. Daughter gets her Masters in May and is moving back!!!

Son is a junior at Old Dominion living at home to save money.

Neither one have figured out why Mrs. Mando and I only cook for two - because neither of them pay rent.

I kid - it is nice having them home, I drag them both dutifully off to see shows and they oblige their fathers 6 yr long mid-life crisis. Daughter is a hip hop fan - was way out of her element when we went to see the String Cheese Incident in Louisville, Roanoke and Asheville a few years back - "Eww Daddo, there are weird hippie people here." She's a trooper though - took in Widespread Panic, Yonder Mountain, New Monsoon, Keller Williams, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Umphreys McGee, the Cheese, Bobby Lee Rodgers, Perpetual Groove, Dark Star, Sam Bush, The Wailers and the Hackensaw Boys with me and only complained a little bit - rolled her eyes a ton though.

Son is a tech metal speed demon guitarist - he has been to a lot of shows with me as well. Doesn't necessarily like all the music - more so the father son bonding thing - but he does appreciate the musical talent of the artists.

I was listening to Scarlet-Fire from 5/8/77 the other night and he came into the study and listened all the way through the B bridge. As it wrapped up he said, "You know, I don't like those guys the way you do, but Jerry Garcia is a fucking beast on that song." Pretty high praise from today's generation (if a bit salty for Mom's ears). I thought it was pretty cool he was impressed by the melodies Jer was weaving rather than raw speed or some metalhead effects.

And while neither one of them will ever see a show like I did - it's something we can share today. Pretty amazing to see the cross generation appeal the Dead bring.

That's part of why they are special - anything you can share in with your kids is at the top of the list.

Gotta love it.

My 9 year old like the GD and fairly regularly bops around the house to it - the almost 13 year old is Jonas Bros all the way - but does some great lipsynching to some of the GD tunes she likes.

I got lots of Good Dad points for buying them (all 4 + 1 friend) tix to the Jonas Bros 3D movie (IMAX no less) on premier night and dropping them off and picking them up. My wife said "Oh, I thought you would go in with them" - I thought about it for a split second then recalled trying to watch one of their vids at the insistence of the 12 year old - no way I could sit through a whole hour and 15 with a theater full of 'tweens'.

I'll trade you the Jonas Brothers for Tupac and all the other bullet catcher thugs my daughter listens to.

Mando – apologies for being so slow to reply – the transatlantic time difference is partly to blame, idleness will account for the rest…

I only have the one teenager on the premises and she’s still a couple of years shy of college. I’ll admit to having slightly exaggerated the ravening beast tendencies for comic effect but certainly when she and her mother team up to expose the old guy’s idiocies and inadequacies yet again they do make a formidable force.

Basically she’s a really good kid with a kind heart and a friendly outgoing nature, able to hold a conversation with just about anybody. Completely unlike me! There’s a lot of overlap in our musical tastes – I know that a good few tracks have migrated from my collection to her iPod. I doubt I’ll ever get her to listen to a whole show but she’s definitely partial to a song or two, particularly Eyes of the World.

Thanks so much for sharing your pics with us – it’s good to know who you’re talking to! There was a ‘who are you’ thread a year or so ago when a few of the resident reprobates posted up their mugshots – no doubt they’re still there somewhere in the bowels of the archive waiting to be found by the resolute searcher.

Oh yes – and many congratulations and best wishes for your upcoming 25th.

I read thru this whole damn thing to find out if you would clarify for BD whether "fora" is a plural of "forums" and what do I get for my efforts?

More on what Dire is incapable of doing...well, no news there.

Nice pics, though, from MJ...yeah, my kids make excellent photo subjects, but you'd never know from looking at them what they've been up too. Probably what my gramma said about me I suppose.

Good to see you hereabouts, Rob.

So take your Strunk & White and shove it! (Of course, I would assume you only consult pre-69 editions)

Ha--I have mutliple versions...love it. Rob probably knows enough to critique it, so it'll be interesting to read of his take on it.

Biblical in my house. My "writing accomplished" son rec'd a nice hard bound (signed first edition I asked?) copy for some writing award prize, and couldn't believe I wanted to and even tried to take it from him...

what made it special to me was that ride in that groovy spaceship!!! :) all the colorful landscapes and distant planets traveled within a song. the freedom of the open road going from show to show, meeting cool people from all over the world. those moments of deja'vu in a song where you knew you were there cosmicly before. its hard to explain.i guess words cant explain it. but you knew it was happening.:) the music!!!never stopped!~
